Portugal is the country I keep going back, because I am her national, an identity I was born with. I love flying to Lisbon, feeling free in the Atlantic breeze while waiting for my passport renewal. Every time I stepped out of the airport and looked up to the very blue sky, it always calmed my soul and never disappointed me once.
My Portuguese citizenship not only allows me to work and live freely in the 26 EU member states in Europe, also I can travel visa free around the world to 188 countries. I would never be who I am today if I wasn’t born with this nationality.
A black friend of mine who lives in Lisbon once told me that Portugal is the least discriminatory country towards black people in the Western world, and that means a lot. The true beauty of this country is the fact that people from all walks of lives and colors and backgrounds can all blend together so harmoniously, giving this place a genuine peaceful vibe.
In recent years, the Portuguese economy has been developing rapidly, attracting families from around the world to immigrate there through the Golden Visa program. All you need is to invest €500,000 in a fund, stay 7 days per year, pass an A2 level Portuguese language exam, and then you are eligible to apply for permanent residency or citizenship after 5 years. Once you have the passport you become an EU citizen, you can work and live freely in over 20 European countries.
However visas like the D2 (Entrepreneur Visa), D7 (Passive Income Visa), and D8 (Digital Nomad Visa) are much more cost-effective visas, they are designed for entrepreneurs, retirees, and freelancers who are planning to stay long-term in Portugal (at least 6 months per year).
