Japan Life Guide by Sio
I have no plans for exams, I just want train my listening and speaking skills. After a few months of self-study, I’m on N4 and can handle basic talks.
Here are the ways I’ve tried, see what suits you

1️⃣ Free Local Classes
Each ward offers free classes weekly, taught by retired volunteers. I attend classes in Abeno, Nishi, and Kita. Content varies—grammar, chatting, or writing.
🔎 Call to book. If full, join the waiting list.
2️⃣ Language Exchanges
Language exchanges are popular in Osaka. Events last 2 hrs, cost ¥500–1000. Some are great; but I attended one hosted in a bar that is so noisy. If your Japanese isn’t intermediate, it’s hard to do real talks.
🔎 Search “Language Exchange” on Meetup
3️⃣ Private Lessons
Private lessons help the most. I have a local teacher who charges ¥1500/hr, and I also take online classes.
🔎Online tutors app
iTalki
It’s my choice cos it’s cheap. Average ¥2000/hr.
Preply
Slightly pricier, often with structured lessons.
Verbling
All professional teachers. Average ¥4000/hr. Best for exams or business use.
4️⃣IG / YouTube
I watch a lot of Japanese teachers’ channels to practice listening, my top recommendation is Shun, he has tons of great N5–N4 vids!

📝P.S. Language school
I wanted to apply but most schools only focus on JLPT or business Japanese, not conversation. And, if you want to join a full-time program, you’ll need at least N5 to apply.
